Martha Ellen Walker was born on April 22, 1921 in LaGrange Township, Bond County, IL, the daughter of William Henry and Anna Lilly (Dennis) Walker. She married her high school sweetheart, John Eldon Thompson on June 17, 1941 in Old Monroe, MO. Together, they celebrated nearly 59 years of marriage and raised four children before John’s passing on May 13, 2000.
Martha’s family and faith were her priorities in life; she made sure she taught her family the importance of a good education and being involved in organizations such as PTA, Home Extension, and 4-H. She encouraged them to be thankful for all the many blessings in life. Among this, Martha showed just how to live a good Christian lifestyle while being a member of the First Baptist Church of Vandalia.
Marti enjoyed sewing, crafting, quilting, and oil painting. She loved gathering with her family and friends, and gardening both vegetables and flowers. Most of all, she loved the time spent with her children and many grandchildren so that she could always watch her lovely family grow.
Mrs. Thompson is survived by her daughter, Carolyn and husband Garry Schmitt of Okemah, OK; son, John M. Thompson of Vandalia; son, Max Thompson and wife Tina of Bartlesville, OK; daughter, Diana and husband Larry St. Cin of Carterville, IL; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, William “Bill”, Chester, and Glenn Walker; sisters, Bonnie Roe, Ruth Austin, and Grace Wilderman; and grandson, Todd Thompson.
