A Vandalia man was arrested on multiple charges on Wednesday evening.
Vandalia Police reports indicate they responded to the 100 block of South 2nd Street for a report of an individual threatening to cut people’s faces off and had possession of a knife and hatchet. And, the individual was identified as 36 year old Jason E. Nowlan. The Vandalia Police Officer says in his report that as he arrived at the residence he observed Nowlan standing on the sidewalk and he observed Nowlan throw a hatchet back into the yard and take a sheathed knife from his waist area and throw it in the yard, as well. The Vandalia Police Officer said he went to retrieve the weapons, Nowlan began walking toward the porch area of the house. The Officer says in the report he ordered Nowlan to stay on the sidewalk and he began yelling that the officer did not have a search warrant and continued walking towards the house and was yelling for another individual to come out. The Vandalia Police Officer says to maintain control of the situation, he grabbed Nowlan’s arm and told him to stop. The Officer says in the report that Nowlan tried to pull away and the Officer told him that if he did not stay put he would be forced to put him on the ground. The Officer says that Nowlan continued to pull away from him and yelling for another individual to come out of the house, at which time the Officer says he pulled Nowlan to the ground. The Officer says that Nowlan fell to his knees and continued to resist being handcuffed. The Officer was able to get him handcuffed and noticed a strong odor of alcohol on Nowlan’s breath. And, he says that an open pint of vodka was found on Nowlan during a search. Another Officer noticed blood on the Officer’s left forearm from abrasions he received during his attempt to handcuff Nowlan.
Nowlan was charged in Fayette County Court on Thursday with 2 counts of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, Resisting a Peace Office/Cause Injury and Disorderly Conduct. The charges include 2 Class 3 Felonies, 1 Class 4 Felony and one Misdemeanor. Nowlan had his bond set at $100,000 during a court appearance on Thursday in Fayette County Court and he is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on October 25th.
