Ruth Elizabeth Holliday, 63, of Vandalia, passed away on June 26, 2021 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00am, Thursday, July 1, 2021 at Vandalia Moose Lodge #1447 with burial following at Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00pm, Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at Vandalia Moose Lodge #1447. Ruth was born May 4, 1958, in Vandalia, the daughter of John and Donna (Carter) VanUytven. She married George Thomas Holliday on August 6, 1977; together they had 5 children and shared 14 years of marriage before his death on February 20, 1992.
Ruth was a hard worker, she bartended at several different establishments over the years all while raising her children and doing alterations and sewing from her home. Ruth was a very talented seamstress, making many wedding and bridesmaid dresses and quilting too many quilts to count. Most recently Ruth had opened her own sewing and quilting business in Ramsey, Holliday’s Quilts and More, she taught several different sewing classes and it also allowed space for others to come and work on their own projects.
She also had a passion for volleyball, Ruth, has refereed girls high school volleyball for over 40 years; she was awarded the Illinois High School Association Girls Volleyball Official of the Year Award in 2017.
Ruth was a member of Mother of Dolors Catholic Church and Women of the Moose, Vandalia Moose Lodge #1447.
She is survived by her mother, Donna VanUytven of Oconee; children, Erika Holliday and husband Mark Sherbeyn of Monticello, Adam Holliday and wife Andrea of Ft. Mitchell, KY, Rachel Holliday of Monticello, Jacob Holliday and girlfriend Mi’Quelle Stewart of Effingham, and Andrea and husband Chris Matthews of Vandalia; grandchildren, Kaitlyn Holliday, Thomas, Matthew, Ada, and Ella Holliday, Taylor McClary, Lydia Holliday, George and Jedi Holliday, and Wylder Matthews; siblings, Rita and husband Nick Scales of Decatur, Paul VanUytven and Pranee of Ramsey, Elaine Heimgartner of Benton, Mike VanUytven of Herrick, Janet and husband Larry Werden of Ashmore, Susie and husband Gary Miller of Ramsey, Steve VanUytven and wife Christy of Oconee, and Dan VanUytven of Ramsey; special friend, Kevin Aukamp of Vandalia; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and father.
