(Springfield, IL) — Federal immigration authorities are about to lose three detention centers in Illinois. Lawmakers in Springfield agreed to a new plan that would close all ICE detention centers in the state by January. There are only three, in McHenry, Pulaski and Kankakee counties. Lawmakers also approved a plan that would make it clear local law enforcement cannot arrest or hold someone simply because they are in this country illegally. Lawmakers first passed that law back in 2017, and the new plan strengthens it.
