The Vandalia City Council took care of two police department related items during its first meeting of April on Monday night. At the beginning of the meeting, City Clerk Peggy Bowen issued the oath to new Vandalia Police Department officer Wade Nevergall with his family, Mayor Rick Gottman and Vandalia Police Chief Jeff Ray surrounding him. Nevergall has been an officer for the St. Elmo Police Department and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office prior to beginning at VPD.
During new business at the meeting, the council unanimously approved the purchase of a new squad car for the VPD. Two bids each for vehicles from Hecht Chevrolet of Vandalia and Hosick Motors were received. When asked his recommendation, Chief Ray said he would go with the low bid of $26,349 from Hosick Motors for a 2021 Dodge Charger Police RWD vehicle. A portion of the funds, $14,000, will be coming from the VPD’s DUI fund.
