The High Winds, Dry Conditions and Low Humidity helped fuel a major field fire on Saturday for the Vandalia Fire Department.
Vandalia Fire Chief Mark Meadows says they were called out shortly after 1 pm to a field fire. He says, upon arrival, they found a raging field fire due to the dry conditions and high winds. Chief Meadows says the fire burned through a railroad right away, along with a set aside field, 1 already harvested corn field and 3 not yet harvested corn fields with the corn still standing at the time of the blaze. Chief Meadows says he estimates 150 acres were burned and they were on scene for 4 hours. He says they were assisted by Brownstown Fire Department, Ramsey Fire Department, Woolsey Brother Farm Supply, Raymond Woolsey, Draege Farms and tractors and discs from Dayton Scott and David Stokes.
