Statement released today by State Representative Blaine Wilhour, State Representative Brad Halbrook and State Representative Chris Miller—-
Shelbyville, IL – State Reps Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville), Chris Miller (R-Oakland) and Blaine Wilhour (R-Beecher City) are issuing the following statement on the recent news tying Speaker Michael Madigan to the ComEd bribery scandal.
“ComEd has just agreed to fully cooperate with federal investigators in its dealings with House Speaker Michael Madigan. The company has admitted to seeking special legislation from Madigan that could be worth $150 million to the company. While Madigan is not named in newly revealed documents, it is clear that “Public Official A” is indeed House Speaker Michael J. Madigan.
Speaker Madigan has ruled Illinois long enough. First elected to the House in 1971, Madigan has served as Speaker of the House for all but two years since 1983. It is time for our state to finally rid itself of the corruption and abuse of power that has been the hallmark of Madigan’s tenure as Speaker of the House.
We know full well that by issuing this statement, the Speaker will block our bills and take actions to make our jobs as legislators more difficult than it needs to be. This is the pettiness, selfishness, and immaturity we have allowed to take place as a result of handing power to a corrupt Chicago politician. We are prepared to deal with Madigan’s childish antics because we understand that truth is on our side.
The ComEd saga proves beyond a shadow of doubt that Speaker Madigan is corrupt. In recent months, several of Madigan’s top male lieutenants have been forced to resign due to allegations of acting inappropriately with some of their female colleagues. One by one individuals close to Madigan have fallen on the sword to protect his regime. How many more of these abuses of power are we going to allow let stand without doing anything about it?
It is time for Madigan to take the high road for once in his political career. It is time for him to resign his House seat. Illinois will always be mired in corruption and shady dealings as long as Michael Madigan remains Speaker of the House. We the undersigned urge the Governor, Democrat legislators and other leaders within the Democrat party to join with us in calling for Speaker Madigan’s immediate resignation. We also urge the FBI to freeze his campaign funds until a complete investigation is done to determine there were no ethical violations in the acquisition of these funds.
It is time to close the book on corruption in Illinois politics once and for all. It is time for Speaker Madigan to resign.”
