(Geneva) — The World Health Organization says the global coronavirus pandemic is accelerating. The director general of the WHO said in a virtual briefing Friday that the 150-thousand new cases reported Thursday was the highest number in a single day, and that almost half of those cases were from the Americas. He said the world was in a new and dangerous phase of the pandemic, and that the virus is “still spreading fast, still deadly, and most people are still susceptible.”

(Washington, DC) — President Trump is thanking Americans for their efforts during the coronavirus pandemic. Trump tweeted a video of himself speaking outside the White House. In the video, he called it an “interesting” and “terrible” time, but vowed the country will come back stronger than ever. Trump vowed that all those whose lives were lost during the outbreak “will not have died in vain.” His video comes the day before he’s set to hold a rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where thousands are expected to gather in close quarters.

(Washington, DC) — The White House says any outbreaks of violence outside President Trump’s Tulsa rally tonight will be unacceptable. During a White House briefing Friday, Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany [[ MACK-en-ay-nee ]] repeated one of Trump’s earlier tweets, that any “protesters, anarchists, agitators, looters or lowlifes” will be treated differently than in “New York, Seattle or Minneapolis.” It’ll be Trump’s first rally in over three months, because of the coronavirus outbreak.

(undated) — Beyonce released a new song on Juneteenth to benefit black-owned businesses. On her website, Beyonce said her new song “Black Parade” will benefit her Black Business Impact Fund, administered by the National Urban League, to support Black-owned small businesses in need. The website also includes a directory of black-owned businesses. “Black Parade” was co-written by Beyonce and is her first new music since “The Lion King.”

(Undated) — This afternoon is the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere and in the U.S.A. In Japan and other parts of Asia it falls on Sunday morning. The longest day of the year in the north is the shortest below the equator. In the north, it marks the official start of summer. Solstice celebrations are taking place in many countries, including what usually is a large gathering of people at Stonehenge in England but which has been cancelled this year due to the coronavirus.
