In 1861, before the Civil War, Illinois was one of only 5 states to ratify a U.S. Constitutional Amendment protecting slavery from federal interference. But, on May 2nd of 2019, the Illinois Senate moved to rescind it’s state support for that amendment. The resolution rescinding Illinois’ support for what for what is known as the Corwin Amendement is sponsored by State Senator Jason Plummer, who gave the Senate some history on the measure.
And, Plummer says the resolution would move on to be seen nationally once it’s passed at the state level.
The Senate adopted the resolution on a vote of 55 to 0. The measure now moves to the Illinois House for consideration.
