(Chicago, IL) — Illinois Republican party officials aren’t turning their backs on Governor Rauner after his signature on a controversial bill to expand abortion access. The bill did prompt a flurry of criticism from rank-and-file Republican lawmakers, some of who called for Rauner’s ouster. Even so, state GOP chief Tim Schneider’s statement only said he was disappointed, frustrated and saddened. Schneider pivoted to criticizing House Speaker Michael Madigan and the Democrats for seeking to use the issue to divide Republicans. Rauner has been the party’s top donor in recent years, giving about 100-million-dollars of his own funds and money from his mostly self-funded political committee.
