An area legislator has introduced legislation that would allow for more use of Illinois Coal right here in the state. State Representative Avery Bourne says the vast majority of Illinois coal is being sold and burned out of state because of the high sulfur content, which is at a higher rate than federal and state air quality standards allow. Bourne says installing scrubbers will remove most of that sulfur.
HB 3656 was approved in the House Energy Committee on Wednesday and will now go before the full Illinois House.
