About 30 young hogs were killed in a barn fire early Tuesday morning. Vandalia Fire Chief Keith Meadows says they got the fire call to a barn with livestock at 2:38 Tuesday morning—with the call to one mile south of the intersection of Carlyle Road and Pittsburg Road. Meadows says that he also had them call the Mulberry Grove Fire Protection District at that time for mutual assistance. Meadows says the barn was a total loss. He added that the barn fire was threatening a nearby structure and they were able to keep the fire confined to the barn. Meadows says there about 30 young hogs that perished in the fire as by the time the fire was discovered it was too late for the livestock to get out of the barn. Meadows says the property is owned by Jason Belcher and was rented by Butch Patterson. Meadows says Vandalia had 15 firefighters on the scene and another half dozen at the station. Meadows says the Mulberry Grove Fire Protection District supplied several men and 2 tanker trucks to assist.
